Quick little coaster

IMG_0044

This cute little coaster is easy to make.  You will need:-

Pale background fabric 5 1/2″ x 4 1/2″

5 patterned squares 1 1/2″ inches square

Wadding 5″ square

Backing 5 1/2″square

Scrap for the bird and Bondaweb 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Some Embroidery thread.

All seams are 1/4″

To Make this project :-

Begin by joining the 5 small squares together.

Draw a bird shape like a petal to fill your Bondaweb.  Iron this to the reverse of the fabric scrap and cut it out neatly.  Iron that to the background fabric.

Stitch the background fabric and the small squares together.

I used a pencil to draw the bird legs and beak.

Put this on top of the wadding and pin to stop it slipping.  Now stitch around the bird shape with a straight stitch and add the beak and legs as you go.  I went round a couple of times to make it look as though it had been sketched and also added a wing and stood him on the ground.

Place the backing right sides together on top of the bird.  Stitch all around the edge leaving a gap at the bottom for turning through.

Turn through and press .  Slip stitch the gap.

I like the look of the blanket stitch around the edge.  I marked dots where the needle was to go.  I started by measuring 1/2″ in and down from the corners.  Once the corner marks were made I placed a ruler between the dots and was able to mark at just about 1/2″ gaps all the way along.

Stitch.

Lastly I added a french knot eye.  A bead or goggly eye or a tiny button would do just as well 🙂
