New Year – New Inspiration

Happy New Year!

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? Many quilters and crafters do, but so often it’s about finishing UFOs, or using up stash before buying more fabric, or keeping our sewing spaces tidy. Necessary (perhaps) but not the most exciting. And after 2020 we think we all need something to look forward to.

So, here at Youngish Quilters we’re not thinking resolutions – we’re thinking INSPIRATION.

New year – new ideas, new vision, new creativity.

With that in mind, what do the following artists have in common?

Any ideas?

For the Youngish Quilter team, there are two key things:
1 – they are fantastic, interesting, creative artists – who are not quilters (as far as we know)
2 – they are just some of the fantastic, interesting, creative artists who are INSPIRING us and our quilt making.

Our New Year, New Inspirations project is all about being inspired by artists working in other mediums. We hope to inspire you too – and perhaps introduce you to some artists you haven’t encountered before.

For example – you may recognise Frida Kahlo – her work (and life story) has become quite well known in recent years. An exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2018 attracted thousands of visitors who were inspired by her art, her clothes and her attitude to life.

But do you recognise the work of Kelly Puissegur?

A contemporary artist based in Los Angeles – Puissegur is inspired by the everyday, including overhead conversations of strangers – which she interprets in a unique and fun style.

And how about the work of Alma Thomas?

Thomas is now recognised as a major artist of the 20th century – known for her colourful, abstract paintings.

Are you inspired yet? We certainly are.

So how will it work?

Every fortnight, starting next Friday, we’ll put up a post about one of the artists currently inspiring us. We’ll tell you a bit about them, their work – and what we find inspiring. Then the following week we’ll post a project which has been inspired by that artist. Each project stands alone so don’t worry if you don’t always have a lot of time to sew – you can pick and choose as we go along. Or maybe you’ll do them all!

What we hope is that you’ll feel as inspired as we do – maybe learn about some artists who are new to you – and be motivated to look at the world in a new way. When quilt making we often just look to other quilt makers for ideas but inspiration really is everywhere – and other artists is a great place to begin.

So, New Year, New Inspiration – we can’t wait to get started!

What a fantastic idea. I wish I had thought of following other types of artists instead of just following patterns as I was growing up. I do it nowadays and some of my current inspirations come from the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I look forward to seeing lots of inspired quilting from our youngish quilters.
